Acupuncuture Therapy

 

 

Acupuncture is a safe and effective means for complementary pain relief. It is a sophisticated and complex form of medicine that employs a whole-body approach and incites the body's endogenous healing mechanisms. It has been practiced for thousands of years and has very few, if any, significant side effects.

The effects of acupuncture on body systems are vast and complex, and involve multiple pathways that influence the neurologic, musculoskeletal, endocrin, cardiovascular, and immune systems. Acupuncture points are distinct loci in the body that are known to cause specific physiologic effects. They are shallow depressions in the body, typically overlying borders between muscles, tendons, or bone. Many points correlate with known anatomic strucutres, such as motor end points. Histologically, many acupoints are asssociated with larger accumulation of mast cells, nerve bundles, and plexuses, capillaries, venules, and lymphatics as compared with surrounding tissues.
